Ruth Lufkin, supervising reference librarian, will feature creative ways to find opportunities through mining the library's resources.  She will demonstrate online tools that allow discovery of useful magazine, journal and newspaper information on specific companies, key personnel and particular industries.

Resources that are available remotely to every library cardholder in New Jersey will be highlighted, as well as those specifically available at Bernards Township Library.

The meeting will be held in the Program Room located on the lower level.  All are welcome at this free program.

Pre-registration is suggested but not required; those who register in advance using the Program Calendar at www.BernardsLibrary.org will receive an email reminder before the program.

For more information call the Library at (908) 204-3031, ext. 4, or email rlufkin@bernards.org.

Members of the Career Forum and Career Networking Group are especially invited to attend these meetings.  Both of these local support groups offer programs of interest to those looking for work or contemplating transition and opportunities to network with other members of the group.

The Career Forum meets at the Somerset Hills YMCA from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings.

The Career Networking Group meets on the first and third Thursday evenings of each month at the Bernards Township Library.

Tweet your way to a job (Louisville Courier-Journal)

Posted: 13 Mar 2010 10:07 AM PST

You may be able to tweet your way into a new career, according to Susan Britton Whitcomb, Deb Dib and Chandlee Bryan, co-authors of the recently published book "The Twitter Job Search Guide."

The micro-blogging Web site is changing how people hunt for work, they said.

The authors give these tips for your short and sweet, real-time job search:

• Active participation is essential. Take the time to regularly expand your network and engage others.

• Don't just ask a hiring manager for a position. Give advice on a subject that matters to them, and let them know you're looking for work.

• Post regular updates about your job search, and acknowledge those who help you along the way.

• Be specific about your objectives and skills.

• Display a distinct brand that helps networking contacts and prospective employers get a quick picture of who you are and how you work.

When should I start looking for a good summer job? (WAFB Baton Rouge)

Posted: 13 Mar 2010 08:30 AM PST

If you're looking to be employed this summer, start the job search in early March. Everyone is tired of hearing it, but a lot of employers aren't hiring new workers in this economy, so finding jobs is tough… and competition is fierce. Here are some tips for upping your odds.

To land a summer gig:

  • Start at your school's career center. Staffers there are trained in job search and making resumes look great, so take advantage of the opportunity.

  • Check out job Web sites like Monster.com, which can help you in your search. Post your resume early and see what comes up.

  • Touch base with former supervisors -- especially if you want to go back to somewhere you've worked in the past. Send an email to let him or her know that you're willing and eager to return to your former post, and be sure to include your updated resume (highlighting recent accomplishments) and dates of availability.

  • Ask friends and relatives about open positions. Often, getting a job is about who you know. A recommendation from the right person could put you over the top.

  • Capitalize on a talent or skill. Make jewelry to sell at craft fairs, or start a lawn care business. I've heard that the best jobs are the ones people create for themselves!
