Job prospects better for this crop of college grads Posted: 08 May 2010 11:42 AM PDT (2 of 2) Tim Luzader, director of the Purdue Center for Career Opportunities, said that while the market is improving, it still has a long way to go. "We don't think there has been an explosion, but the trajectory is heading in the right direction," he said. "There is a little sliver of hope." Luzader said one noticeable side effect of the reported increase is the number of companies with a presence on Purdue's campus. For example, employer participation during April's Just in Time Job Fair nearly doubled when compared to last year's event. Luzader said in an effort to further assist students, the Center for Career Opportunities is offering two additional career fairs this summer. The center also provides services to alumni at no charge. "It was a situation where we said, 'What can we do beyond graduation?' " Luzader said. "There are outstanding students who put so much time into their studies, but as a result, they may not have had the time to begin looking for jobs." Luzader said that, in addition to making the rounds at career fairs on and off campus, students should take the time to find help while it is still available. "I would encourage everyone to make a connection with someone who may aid them in their search before they leave campus," he said. "It could be a professor, an adviser or anyone that may serve as a resource." Kristen Marshall, a Purdue junior and a science major, said she has been working to make herself a standout applicant in time for her graduation next year by getting early recommendation letters from her professors. She said she also plans to pile on the extracurricular activities and volunteer hours during her senior year. "I did an internship last summer, but I have to make the most of what time I have left," she said. "I will have a very light class load, so I plan to use my all of my free time to beef up the resumé. "I'll have plenty of time to party when I have a job." Five Filters featured article: The Art of Looking Prime Ministerial - The 2010 UK General Election.
