Search for missing teen enters third day Posted: 16 May 2010 07:02 AM PDT Sunday is crucial for teams combing the Guadalupe River for a missing Cuero teen last seen Friday, as river levels have dropped Sunday but are expected to significantly rise and hinder the search Monday. "We hope to conclude it today," said DeWitt County Sheriff Jode Zavesky around 8 a.m., one hour into the search Sunday morning. "At this point, the river's back down, but it's expected to crest tomorrow morning at 23 feet. That will make our job pretty much impossible." Zavesky said the search for Jeremy Perez, 17, is in recovery mode, as the teen is believed to have been in the water for more than 40 hours. National Weather Service forecasters report between 2 and 5 inches of rain fell on the Guadalupe River basin from Friday to Sunday morning, causing the river to rise. A Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter will assist search teams on small boats Sunday, Zavesky said, and officials with the DeWitt County Sheriff's Office are joined by the Texas Parks and Wildlife, the Cuero Fire Department and volunteers believed to be friends of Perez's family. If Perez's body is not found Sunday, officials might wait until Tuesday to resume the search, as the rising water will clutter the river with debris and endanger search crews. Searching will likely be suspended Monday, Zavesky said. Cuero High School students had the day off Friday for bad weather, Zavesky said, and Perez and several friends had been swimming in the Guadalupe River near the Highway 72 bridge when Perez was last seen. "They were just doing what boys do," he said. "He (Perez) went to cross the river, got caught up in it, and that was the last time they saw him. One of the boys tried to swim down to help him, but it was too late." Zavesky said crews are focusing the search on an area about 10 miles downstream from where Perez was last seen. Although rainfall has affected the search for Perez, it is not believed to have caused his disappearance. He may not have been a very strong swimmer, Zavesky said, and the current where Perez was swimming is notoriously strong. According to Zavesky, the teen's relatives are not searching the river but have been communicating with the Sheriff's Office. "They're holding pretty strong," he said, "but I think they just want the search to be over." Five Filters featured article: The Art of Looking Prime Ministerial - The 2010 UK General Election.
