Michigan Job Search readers weigh in on the future of extended federal unemployment benefits Posted: 11 May 2010 09:17 AM PDT By Jackie HeadapohlMay 11, 2010, 8:55AMA June 2 expiration date of eligibility for extended federal unemployment benefits fast approaches with little action by Congress, while the long-term unemployed lobby for additional weeks of federal unemployment benefits. On Saturday, Michigan Job Search asked readers for their thoughts on the future of federal unemployment benefits, and they had a lot to say.Paul's story is representative of several unemployed people that commented and are watching Congress with fingers crossed as it decides the future of unemployment benefits. I am one of those individuals whose benefits are running out … In October, 2008, I lost my job and began collecting and have been ever since.… I have applied for 787 jobs and not received a single offer. I have had less than 30 interviews. My unemployment runs out in 6 weeks. At that time I will lose my roof over my head and have to apply for welfare. … I wish the public had a clear, realistic knowledge of what is really going on and why a Tier 5 of even 13 more weeks might salvage the financial and emotional lives of some really great Americans. An extension of the June 2 federal unemployment eligibility deadline means the world to some readers like Ray, who will lose his benefits in six weeks if Congress doesn't act. I'm in the middle of my second extension which runs out in six weeks unless Congress extends the filing deadline to the end of the year. . Both me and my wife will be homeless by the end of June unless by some miracle I find a job ... Yes they should both add another tier and extend the filing deadlines for the first four extensions. Some commenters don't want to see federal unemployment benefits extended like jvh679, who wrote: "How long should federal unemployment benefits last?" I believe the author starts with a false premise. They assume that unemployment benefits should exist, at least in their current form, at all. Why should the federal government or the state, for that matter, be responsible for paying someone when they are out of work? Now there's the real debate to be had.Commenter josh1937 has a similar viewpoint: After the first 26 weeks people should be willing to take any job, even low pay. If they don't, they are spoiled. They feel it is fine to live off of other people's money, doing nothing to earn it, [rather] than deal with their own problems and face the fact that they will have to change their lifestyle. This is their problem, it shouldn't be mine. Some readers took a longer-term view of the problem and offered suggestions to reform the system or create jobs. Nativeand Proud wants to know why the U.S. isn't investing in its infrastructure to create jobs. To keep extending [benefits] isn't fixing the problem. Didn't this new guy that was elected say something about new jobs? So, how many bridges are in the US? How many are in bad shape? How many miles of electric transmission lines are there? Wasn't it said it needs a desperate upgrade? How many roads do you drive on everyday that need to be repaired? While these things sit in limbo, the money to fix our own infrastructure is being given to banks that didn't need it to begin with!derfderf1984 had an idea to encourage unemployed people to find jobs more quickly by decreasing the amount paid out in benefits on each extension. This would be a way to provide somewhat and encourage people to act now to get a job or change their living standards. Suffer now to not make us all pay and our kids pay for these hard times.111pct agreed that people need to gradually be removed from unemployment benefits and added a suggestion: How about this? Have our tier four safety net, but anything further would be an optional period where assistance is paid against future earnings.Another commenter, DetSportsFanInAtl wants to add a volunteer or work requirement to those receiving unemployment benefits to prevent abuse of the system. I know people that are abusing the unemployment system. They're not looking for a job and/or are working under the table for over 12 months. I like the thought of requiring the unemployed to volunteer or work in some capacity at their local or state municipality.Other readers wondered what would become of unemployed people when they exhaust their benefits, like msufan801: You can stop benefits, but then you're going to have to figure out what to do with millions of people that are unemployed … So you can bicker about extending unemployment benefits, but the impact of joblessness is going to hit other government programs. Food stamps and child welfare are going to get hit hard. There are no easy answers or solutions, according to 111pct, who ended his post this way: No easy way out ... This is what being in a pickle feels like... Everybody has a different opinion about how we got here, but you know what? We're here ... now what? Nothing is going to fix this other than time and no doubt that means more pain for these most vulnerable Americans. Luckily and hopefully because of these challenges, all of us will be wiser in the future. Five Filters featured article: The Art of Looking Prime Ministerial - The 2010 UK General Election.
