During your extended job search, become your own best friend Posted: 21 Jun 2010 06:51 AM PDT Question: After four months out of work, I have noticed I'm getting more down on myself. Considering that my job search could stretch on, I realize this negativity is not going to work in my favor. So what can I do about it? Answer: Become your own best friend to counter the cynicism that creeps into an extended job search. Rather than being self-critical, the way out of the negativity during this transition is to honor yourself like you would a best friend. A best friend appreciates your gifts and sees your potential. Think of the many tasks that you to do on a daily basis. Maybe they include visits to an ailing neighbor, or diligence in attending to the details of your job search, or always being there to pick up the kids. Be grateful to yourself for those qualities that you exhibit every day. This gratitude is not only uplifting, but a stress reducer, as well. A best friend knows everything about you and loves you anyway. A best friend doesn't expect the perfection that you demand of yourself. Pay attention to the mental chatter going on in your head because it affects how you present yourself. Turn a negative message around with the phrase, "and yet," which suggests a benefit or a step you're taking to improve. For example, if you're always telling yourself, "I'm too shy to network," add to that, "and yet I'm a really good listener" or "and yet I'm willing to try." A best friend is fun to be with. Spend time with people you enjoy and on free or low-cost activities that nourish your soul. Job seekers too often cast aside fun as frivolous, when in reality, the energy you get from engaging in positive outlets is reflected in your job search. The better you feel about yourself, the more likely you'll project that confidence in your search. CareerCast.com Report: Why Your Job Interview Body language Can Help You Win – Or Lose – A New Job Posted: 20 Jun 2010 04:18 PM PDT Your job interview body language has more of an impact on your success than anything you say, according to a new report by CareerCast.com, a national job-search portal. Exhibiting the right body language can help you convey an enthusiastic, positive and confident attitude to interviewers. So unless you want to end up starring in a scene from "The Office," watch your body language – it could be the reason why you're not landing the job you want. According to CareerCast.com, studies suggest that the nonverbal cues you give during job interviews are more important than verbal ones, and they speak volumes about how you'd perform in a job. Pitch, volume, intonation, pauses and sighs you give when answering also are important, while verbal content – what you actually say - is the least critical aspect. "Smart candidates know that interviews start as soon as they enter the lobby," says Tony Lee, publisher, CareerCast.com. "Set the right tone by being early, and use the extra time to compose yourself. If you're waiting for a while, don't pull out pages of notes to review. Instead, check email messages or glance through available magazines or literature in the waiting area. This creates the impression that you're relaxed before stressful events, and helps you project confidence during the critical early moments of the interview." CareerCast.com offers a range of job interview body language tips, including:
