On Sunday, Jan. 16, you can get some pointers on sharpening your job search during a two-hour radio show being aired by KABC/790 Talk Radio. The show is sponsored by the Diocese of Orange as an outgrowth of its Hope Works effort to help the unemployed find jobs. Six job experts, including executive recruiters from IMPACT Hiring Solutions and PeopleBest Inc. representatives from the Manpower temp agency and Monster.com, and officials with the county"s One-Stop centers and Coastline Community College, will discuss ways of finding a job beyond just hitting a send button and crossing your fingers. The pre-taped show will offer ideas on networking and how to build on your contacts and your contacts' contacts to find job openings. "Eighty percent of the jobs that are available are almost never advertised," said Barry Deutsch, a partner at IMPACT Hiring Solutions. "If you are not networking with these various people, you'll never have a chance." The panel will also discuss how to find insiders at a company to help you get your resume in front of a person instead of a computer. You can also learn about free tools — many available online — ranging from tutorials to upgrade your skills, to ways to target your resume and to even making the most of your LinkedIn profile. Diocese spokesman Ryan Lilyengren said officials decided to take to the airwaves with a jobs advice program after the success of their Hope Works workshop last fall, which attracted 1,000 attendees. "We feel like many of the major issues facing struggling families in Orange County stems from unemployment," he said. "The need is so great." Lileygren said the diocese hopes to reach at least 100,000 people through its Sunday broadcast.
You can also listen to the show online at www.KABC.com or at the diocese web site, www.rcbo.org. A podcast and a video of the session also will be available at the diocese web site after the program airs.
