STEUBENVILLE - Kevin Lewis spent 30 years at the Weirton Steel Corp. before accepting a buy-out offer two years ago.

Now just two months shy of graduation from Eastern Gateway Community College Lewis was one of approximately 75 students attending the annual Job Placement Day at the college.

"My last 20 years in the mill were in electrical maintenance. But when I came here I decided to take accounting and business classes and look for something in the insurance industry. I hope I get some leads today for a job after I graduate in May," explained Lewis.

He said he was set to talk to representatives from Western & Southern Insurance and Primerica Financial Services.

"Do you have resumes with you?" asked Judy Miller, EGCC job placement director.

"Right here. I've already signed up with the companies I'm interested in and am ready to go, said the Steubenville resident.

Miller has been coordinating the annual Job Placement Day "for more years than I can remember. We have 17 employers this year and I believe this event makes a big difference for our graduates.

"The soon-to-be graduates have a chance to interview with prospective employers and practice their interview skills. We also have employers who may be hiring in the near future or are preparing for hiring in the future. This gives them a chance to talk to potential employees and gather resumes," explained Miller.

Ken Johnson, general manager of V & M Star of Youngstown, returned to the school he knew as Jefferson Technical College in 1983 to seek mechanical and electrical engineering students.

"Our company is looking at a $650 million expansion in the seamless steel tube manufacturing industry. We are always looking for talented employees. Our general area has been depressed the past several years but there are quality students graduating from this community college. That's why I am here today," declared Johnson.

"We believe in affiliations with colleges in our area and I'm happy to now be involved with Eastern Gateway. This is our first time to be at the Job Placement Day and I already have 10 future graduates signed up to talk to us today," noted Johnson.

Sharon Coleman, human resource manager at Marsh Bellofram of Newell, was looking for industrial engineer students for a summer co-op program.

"And I'll be collecting resumes for future openings at our company," she added.

Vickie Bouregeois-Maro of Richmond was waiting at the Kuester Implement table for owner Dave Boring.

"I love working outdoors doing gardening and landscaping. I thought this would be a good opportunity for me," she said.

And Boring, who returned to the Job Placement Day after a four-year absence, said he would be ready to hire a student "if the right candidate comes along today."

"I am looking for sales associates with some business management education and an understanding of Microsoft computer programs. It will be a chance for the right person. My son is taking classes here at the community college and I know they have outstanding graduates," remarked Boring.

A few feet away Onisha Gilbert of Steubenville was asking Ohio Highway Patrol Recruitment Trooper Craig Monte of Lisbon about job opportunities.

Gilbert will graduate in May with an associate degree in law enforcement and corrections.

"We are definitely looking for full-time recruits. We have had good results from our participation at the community college Job Placement Days in the past. And we are entering a hiring period and will be looking for recruits for the near future," said Monte.
