Labor department launches search for Filipino with toughest job Posted: 26 May 2010 04:13 AM PDT MANILA, Philippines—Who has the tougher job—a manager or a messenger? A Makati girl or a palengke boy? A jeepney driver or an accounts driver? The Department of Labor and Employment on Wednesday launched a contest to find out which Filipino has the toughest job. A newly opened website, www.toughjobsphilippines.com, will be accepting nominations up to August 21 from people who believe they have the toughest job or who know someone they believe has the toughest job. Boxing champion and incoming Sarangani Congressman Manny Pacquiao will personally award the winner with a trophy and cash prize as part of the government-private sector undertaking to honor the Filipino laborer. Pacquiao, who was still recovering from an ailment, was unable to grace the launching of the contest at noon Wednesday at the DOLE main building in Intramuros, Manila. He is the endorser of a pain-reliever brand whose manufacturer United Laboratories Inc. initiated the contest. A participant must register at the website, upload a picture and explain why he or his nominee has the toughest job. The DOLE, through the Bureau of Working Conditions and the Occupation Safety and Health Center, will screen the nominees, come out with a short list, from which the winner would be voted upon online. Any Filipino of legal age and with a legitimate job may be nominated. The contest is also open to Filipinos abroad. "The search for the toughest jobs in the Philippines is a groundbreaking initiative that seeks to honor Filipino men and women who face the challenges for their day-to-day jobs with pride, resiliency and most of all toughness," said Sheila Roño, Alaxan brand representative. Roño said no job is too small or too easy because how one carries it out—whether he rises above the pain and the challenge—is what determines whether a job is tough or so-so "Really, pain is a badge of honor. It's one sigh that you've exerted enough effort and commitment to do your job well," she added. Labor Undersecretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz, who attended the launching, said the contest was in line with the government's campaign for decent work. "We promote respect and dignity in whatever work you do," she said. Some labor group leaders who attended the launching said they thought public school teachers, combat soldiers, mediamen and miners could vie for the title of having the toughest jobs. A check on the website showed early nominations, such as those of Florentino Balingit, a dancing traffic enforcer in Cavite; John Calvo, the first to fly an Airbus A380 under the Emirates Airlines; Lerma Terrana, police community relations official, and Primitivo Calvo, a taxicab driver who returned the money left by passenger. New Job Search Center in Windsor Posted: 24 May 2010 08:27 PM PDT
Looking for work can be difficult. Stephen Goss from Windsor knows that. A few years ago he was out of work. "The environment can be pretty overwhelming going down to a big place at first and trying to learn all the different steps on setting up your job search," said Goss. It can also be costly. "There's nothing really around here, besides driving all the way to Binghamton," said Goss. So Goss decided to give back to his community by helping those who are unemployed. He teamed up with the village to set up a job search center here at the Windsor Village Community House. "It's a big help to our community. It's a big boom," Windsor Librarian, Diane Wallick. Right now there are two computers set up with a low cost operating system called linux, exclusively used for job searches.
In the future, Goss and village officials hope to even expand the center by including job search classes and possibly, a job fair. ***FOX 40'S GRACE CHARLES REPORTING*** blog comments powered by DisqusNews system programming and website hosting by EFX internet

Unemployed Residents Hope Job Fair Will Put an End to Their Search Posted: 24 May 2010 04:52 PM PDT Job seekers from all over Northwest Arkansas flocked to the 2010 Northwest Arkansas Spring Job fair today hoping to put an end to their search for work. Today they had the opportunity to meet with over 50 exhibitors with nearly 1300 positions they're looking to fill today, from the Northwest Arkansas area, Little Rock, Missouri and Oklahoma. Organizers say job hunters were eager to see what the fair had to offer. "When I got here this morning at 7 there were people waiting to participate in resume portion, so a lot of people are very eager." The Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce sponsored the event to bring employers and potential employees together. Gretchen Laffoon says job seekers are ready to get to work. "I think they're very eager, they're prepared, they're dressed appropriately for an interview which is what we like to see," says Laffoon. "People with resumes in hand and ready to fill out applications and talk to area employers." People like Tony Mortimer. "I've been looking for a job for almost a year now. It's just hard to make what I was making before," he says. And after coming out to the Northwest Arkansas Job Fair, he feels one step closer to making that happen. Mortimer says, "I think my chances are pretty good, I got a good resume and a good work ethic, so I say I got an eighty percent chance of getting a job." Windsor opens new job search center Posted: 25 May 2010 02:55 PM PDT
BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- Job seekers in the far eastern corner of Broome County can now travel less to find work, at least that's the goal of a joint venture between Project Tech and the Windsor Village Community House. The two have teamed up to provide a job search center at the Windsor Village Offices on Main Street. The center will have pamphlets, workbooks and computer access, all based on models used by larger workforce centers in more urban Southern Tier areas. "I actually wanted to have a place available so they don't have to drive all the way to Binghamton to look for work, save money. Give them an opportunity if they don't have broadband," said Stephen Goss, workforce center developer. The center will be open Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. to noon.
